The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` way back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. However, these, old recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move on, we have a couple of recipe books published in the 1300s ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are unconnected to the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared for the rich and wealthy people of the period. During the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking books are highly popular as a result of increased literacy, more free time and having more disposable income. The revolution that is television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
