The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be found far back into the distant past, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these early records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including some familiar names such as thyme, fennel and parsley. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two books published in the fourteenth century ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are not about the indian food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food served to the wealthy. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the holy land, including spices like basil and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for an increase in recipe publications, many of which are kept safe in private collections. The TV revolution gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
