The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed way back into the far past, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have some interesting books published in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books have no connection with the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the rich people of those days. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the holy land, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new tastes caused an explosion in publications on food, the majority of which are now in academic collections. The arrival of TV brings us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
