The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes back into distant history, in truth as far back as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later, there are two interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the menus of the nobility of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices like parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs led to an eruption in cookery books, the majority of which are now in private libraries. For the decades that followed, the wealthy families of Europe tried to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Even so, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe publications are starting to become popular as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased leisure time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
