The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Later on, there are two interesting cookery books which date from the 14th Century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are not about the curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals eaten by the wealthy. By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking books were increasing in popularity mostly due to more people being able to read, more leisure time and disposable income. |
