The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes far back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also recounts how the cooks of Roman times used many different spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today like thyme, rue and asafoetida. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy land, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for an increase in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private libraries. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cook books were highly popular mostly as a result of better eduction, more free time and being a little richer. |
