The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes way back into antiquity, at least as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he informs us how the Roman cooks used many different spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, mint and dill. For the decades that followed, the rich families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes of the day. The arrival of television brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
