The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated. Later on, there were two recipe books published in the 1300s - one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are not about the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the rich and wealthy people of the time. For the centuries that followed, the upper classes competed to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
