The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `wonderful`. Moving on, we have a couple of interesting books dating from the fourteenth century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food eaten by the rich people of the period. During the following few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes common in their social group. The revolution that is television brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
