The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. Moving on, there were a couple of interesting recipe books which were published in the 14th Century - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and powerful of the time. During the following few centuries, the upper classes competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the advent of the 1900s, cookery books are in high demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and disposable income. The revolution that is television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
