The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, generally, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to historians are a few tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were split into starters, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef recounts how the early Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including a few you will know such as thyme, fennel and dill. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new foods and spices was responsible for an eruption in recipe manuscripts, many of which still exist in private collections. The revolution that is television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
