The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions way back into the distant past, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving on, there are a couple of interesting recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the nobility of those days. During the following few centuries, the powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books are in high demand, mostly due to better eduction, more leisure time and disposable income. |
