The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, early cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different spices, including many that are still in use today like thyme, mint and dill. For the decades that followed, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Filled Bon Bons recipe.
