The History of Recipes

Food historians have proved the existance of recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cookbooks were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius tells us how the cooks of his times used a wide range of herbs and spices, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and dill.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations created an eruption in publications on food, the majority of which are now in private collections.

The introduction of the TV gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our web site.
