The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be found way back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, generally, these old cook books were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as thyme, fennel and parsley. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have some recipe books which date from the 14th Century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the indian food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and powerful of the period. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and spices led to an explosion in publications on food, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. The TV revolution brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
