The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed far back into antiquity, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, sadly, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he describes how the ancient Romans used a good variety of herbs, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs prompted a surge in publications on food, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
