The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of recipes way back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early records were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also recounts how the cooks of Roman times made use of many different spices, including some familiar names like bay, rue and asafoetida. Over the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
