The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius recounts how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, fennel and parsley. For the centuries that followed, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
