The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into history, at least as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he tells us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today for example bay, fennel and dill. Moving on, there are some recipe books which date from the 14th Century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the rich people of the period. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
