The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of written recipes back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were divided into starters, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. He also tells us how the ancient Romans made use of many different aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise like bay, rue and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and spices from the East, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an outbreak in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. The TV revolution brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
