The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be found far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find some interesting books which date from the 1300s : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the menus of the wealthy. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes created a surge in cookery books, most of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV gave us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Mocha Icing recipe.
