1/2 cup butter
2 cup sugar water
2 tsp cocoa
1/2 cup peanut butter
3 cup oatmeal or:
1 cup coconut
Directions
Mix butter, sugar, water and cocoa together, bring to a boil for 30
seconds. Remove from heat and add peanut butter, oatmeal or coconut.
Drop on wax paper and let harden.

The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be traced way back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these early cook books were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into starters, main course and afters, something we still use today. He also tells us how the Roman chefs used a wide range of spices, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and dill. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were a couple of recipe books published in the 14th Century : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the nobility of the time. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from the holy lands, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for an increase in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. The arrival of TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
