The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were two books published in the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they have no connection with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the upper classes of that period. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. However, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
