The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be traced far back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. However, these, early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful. Later, there are two interesting cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menues of the nobility of the period. For the decades that followed, the wealthy families of Europe tried to lay on the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe publications are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more leisure time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television brought us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
