The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into starters, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient chefs used a wide range of herbs, including some that we all recognise like basil, rue and dill. For the decades that followed, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
