The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes far back into antiquity, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient cooks used a wide range of spices and herbs, including a few you will know such as basil, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs caused an outbreak in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of television gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
