The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be found far back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. He recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius describes how the Roman chefs made use of many herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, rue and dill. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices like rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an eruption in publications on food, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
