The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed far back into distant history, at least as far back as early Egypt, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these old recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. Moving on, there are two books published in the fourteenth century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are unconnected to the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of those days. During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe books are starting to become popular as a result of better eduction, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. |
