The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` far back into history, at least as far as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated. As we move on, we find two interesting books which were published in the fourteenth century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the spicy food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of the period. During the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy competed with each other to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, cook books were in high demand, mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. |
