The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes back into antiquity, at least as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are some recipe books which date from the 1300s : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals served to the rich people of the period. Over the next few centuries, the wealthy families of the West competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Syrup recipe.
