The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be tracked way back into the distant past, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are two interesting cookery books from the 14th Century - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are nothing to do with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of food eaten by the upper classes of those days. Over the following few centuries, the powerful families of the West tried to lay on the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
