The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also describes how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like basil, mint and dill. For the next few years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Waffles ( Bisquick ) recipe.
