The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of meal recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`. As we move on, there are a couple of books which date from the 14th Century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food enjoyed by the rich and wealthy people of the period. During the next few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
