The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked far back into the distant past, at least as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further. However, these, ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the chefs of Roman times used many herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise like basil, rue and asafoetida. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted a torrent in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of TV gave us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Almond Velvet recipe.
