Directions
Boil together 10 minutes. Put in hot, sterilized jars. Seal and
process 8 minutes in water bath.

The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found back into the far past, in truth as far as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. However, these, old records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are some tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef tells us how the cooks of his times made use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few you will know such as bay, mint and asafoetida. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the holy land, including rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices created a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are now in private libraries. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
