The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes back into distant history, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, generally, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. He also informs us how the early Romans used a good variety of spices, including some that we all recognise for example bay, rue and dill. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices prompted a surge in books on cookery, some of which still exist in academic collections. By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe publications are highly popular mostly due to better eduction, increased leisure time and disposable income. The introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
