1/2 lb marshmallows
1 package figs, small package
1/2 lb dates, stoned
1/2 lb almonds, blanched
1/2 cup pecans, or walnuts
1 cup cocoanut, shredded
1 maraschino cherries, small bottle
Directions
Melt marshmallows over hot water until very soft. Grind figs, dates,
nuts and cocoanut. Chop and drain cherries. Mix and pat out to 1/2
inch thickness. Cut in squares, roll in granulated sugar.

The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed far back into the far past, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, mostly, these old cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were split into starters, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the Roman chefs used a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like thyme, rue and dill. Over the following few centuries, the powerful and rich competed to serve the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. When we get to the 1900s, cookbooks are highly popular due to better eduction, more free time and being a little richer. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
