The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` back into the distant past, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, in the main part, these old records were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he recounts how the Romans used a wide range of aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today such as bay, rue and parsley. During the next few centuries, the powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe publications were in high demand, due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more disposable income. The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Christmas Ornament Cookies recipe.
