The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes far back into the distant past, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient records were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, something we still use today. Additionally, he recounts how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices, including many that are still in use today like thyme, mint and parsley. Later, there were a couple of recipe books which date from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of that time. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the East, including spices like parsley and basil. These new foods and tastes prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are kept safe in private collections. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery books are highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased free time and disposable income. |
