The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also informs us how the cooks of Roman times used many different aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example thyme, fennel and asafoetida. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an eruption in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are now in private libraries. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookery books are greatly in demand mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more free time and a general increase in wealth. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
