The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existance of recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cook books were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful. During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius assembled a few documents which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient cooks used many different spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise such as bay, rue and dill. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful families of the West tried to offer the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe books are starting to become popular due to better eduction, more leisure time and having more money. The introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
