The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found far back into the far past, certainly as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find a couple of interesting recipe books which appeared in the 1300s : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals eaten by the rich and wealthy people of that time. Over the next few hundred years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent meals, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The arrival of TV gave us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Chutney Barbecue Glaze recipe.
