The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions far back into antiquity, at least as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Closer to modern times, we find some recipe books which appeared in the 1300s - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the rich people of that period. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused a surge in publications on food, many of which are now in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
