The History of Recipes

We can read the history of meal recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, these, old cookbooks were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics are a few tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful.

Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many herbs, including many that are still in use today such as basil, rue and asafoetida.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices created a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, many of which still exist in private cookery archives.

For the next few years, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site.
