The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to track the history of written cooking instructions way back into ancient history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `wonderful`.

Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were separated into starters, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs, including some that we all recognise for example thyme, mint and parsley.

Moving on, we have a couple of interesting recipe books from the 14th Century - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the nobility of the time.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the East, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an outbreak in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in private cookery archives.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading.
