The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes way back into the far past, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later, we have a couple of cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are unconnected to the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of that time. For the centuries that followed, the upper-class families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cinnamon Chocolate Chip Drops recipe.
