The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these old cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius describes how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many different herbs, including a few you will know like bay, mint and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an eruption in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. The TV revolution gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
