The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existance of recipes far back into distant history, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into starters, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he describes how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many herbs, including some familiar names like basil, mint and dill. Closer to modern times, there were some recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they have no connection with the curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of that period. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the East, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an explosion in manuscripts on cooking, some of which still exist in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
