The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later, there are two interesting cookery books which date from the fourteenth century : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books have no connection with the curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals served to the rich people of that period. For the decades that followed, the powerful families of Europe tried to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking books were increasing in popularity mostly due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The arrival of television brought us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cinnamon Spread recipe.
