The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are a couple of interesting cookery books which were published in the fourteenth century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are unconnected to the indian food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menus of the rich and powerful of the period. Over the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording the recipes of their peers. The introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
