The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes far back into history, certainly as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `blissful`. Moving on, we find a couple of interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are unconnected to the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of that time. During the following few centuries, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the 1900s, cook books were in high demand, mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money to spend. |
