The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into history, certainly as far back into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cook books were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he describes how the cooks of his times used many herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like basil, rue and dill. During the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to serve up the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cinnamon Raisin Oatmeal recipe.
